Issues: Education
Education is the right of every American. Public schooling through high school must be available to all who wish to pursue an education. No child should be left out of this opportunity. Any child left without an education loses too much opportunity for a productive future. As a result, all of society suffers. We cannot afford as a country to allow our children to be uneducated through at least the high school level.
Educational opportunity beyond the high school level is necessary to fulfill the needs of our country in terms of leadership and technical advancement.
Proposed Solutions
I propose several means of providing the educational opportunities we need in this country today.
- Expand support for college education in terms of various government supported grants and scholarships along with government backed loans which are offered at an interest rate compatible with easy repayment by the graduating student. Such loans may come either through the private sector or directly from the government in a variety of different programs. Such variation allows all who need assistance to find a source of money suitable to their need. These monies are an investment in the future of our country and not some giveaway program.
- Invest in secondary schools for high-school dropouts. Those lacking the basic high school education need access to classes which encourage at least a GED and give those students a basis for pursuing further educational opportunities in the future. Community colleges, various social organizations and clubs, and civic groups may provide both the housing and even the staff with government funds to support the tasks.
- Local communities are for the most part best able to control the education of their children. Federal dollars may be used to fund those programs, but the parents and lawmakers within the community need the freedom to determine just how and where their children will be educated.
- Innovation in education needs both encouragement and study to find the most effective ways of imparting learning to children. No single method is likely to work for all children. There may be ways that are not yet discovered. The search for more and better ways of fostering education must continue indefinitely. Funding various grants to study teaching methods and classroom facilities.
- Encourage stronger curricula with emphasis on math and science skills. All levels of students should be challenged to increase their skills. Students must learn to think independently and to work cooperatively, depending on the task at hand. Standards may be set by locals, but nationwide testing may be offered for those students wishing to find their rank in the nation.
- Allow quality educational environments for young children of low income families. This may be combined with day care facilities to insure an early start to education. Increase funding for Head Start and other similar programs is essential if our younger children are to be given a better chance to gain an education.
- Give poor performing or underprivileged children access to schooling during the summer months. This may be combined with child care in order for both children and parents to benefit.
- Provide books for those families unable to purchase for themselves. This program may be associated with other welfare programs such as food stamps or support of dependent children.
Education: A Long-term Investment
Insuring a proper education for all will cost money and will take time. This is one more investment in the long-term health of our country. Education has for much too long been underfunded or ignored in favor of other issues. The time to end that failing course has come. We must educate all our citizens if we are to have any hope of a strong and vibrant country in the future.
